Craft

We recognise the value of skilled craft in the modern era. It takes time and care to make each product by hand. Our respect for the art and dexterity of craftsmanship ensures we create products with integrity.

AboutHeritageDesignCraftSustainability

We believe in using traditional methods to realise original designs. Collaborating with craftsmen for over fifty years allows us to design almost intuitively to the strengths of each material.

Glass

Mouthblown glass offers almost endless potential for transformation. Experience  enables us to experiment with different techniques, pushing the boundaries of hand production.

The raw ingredients  sand, ash and lime are heated in the kiln until molten. Glassblowers  work in teams, with each person responsible for a different element of the process - training for years to perfect their craft.

Once  the basic form is blown, the piece is finished by hand while the glass is still hot. One of the most skilled finishing techniques is scissor cutting while the glass is hot to produce a thick, rounded, rim.

Wood

All of our wood is FSC®-certified – the independent, internationally-recognised mark of responsible and sustainable forestry. We work with walnut, European ash, oak and beech as each wood possesses its own unique characteristics.

The raw wood is seasoned to reduce water content before it is used. Curing improves the texture and durability of the wood while enhancing the natural grain.

Once cured, planks are cut to size. Corners and edges are sanded by hand at multiple stages for a smooth finish.

Porcelain

Porcelain has been prized for centuries for its balance of durability and delicacy in comparison to other ceramics. The complex production process involves multiple stages, from to shaping and firing to glazing and decoration.

Raw porcelain clay is formed in bespoke moulds to create the body of each piece. Skill, precision and patience are required to mix ingredients to an optimal consistency and texture.

Handles for mugs and teapots are positioned and applied by hand. Multiple firing and glazing ensures the pure white colour and durability of the finished products. Selected pieces are individually hand-painted.
